SOUND HOREG
Horeg sound system—a strikingly loud mobile audio setup consisting of stacked speakers mounted on trucks—gained popularity in East Java around late 2022 through viral social media videos that showcased music so powerful it shaken walls and even roofs. The phenomenon, named from the Javanese word for “to vibrate,” blends genres like dangdut koplo, EDM, and DJ remixes and is frequently featured at street parties, village carnivals, weddings, and festivals across Java and beyond. While celebrated as a vibrant expression of local communal culture, Horeg has also sparked controversy, with complaints about noise pollution, property damage, and public disturbance prompting religious authorities like MUI in East Java to issue a fatwa declaring the practice haram, as well as call for regulatory oversight.
