DAVAO DEATH SQUAD
Since Duterte’s presidency began in 2016, it is estimated that over 7,000 people have been killed in his controversial drug war. The fatalities include those killed by both police and vigilantes. Despite significant international criticism, Duterte remains popular in the Philippines, with many citizens perceiving increased safety and supporting his aggressive stance on crime. However, critics express concern and hopelessness over the escalating death toll, particularly in impoverished areas.
Duterte has openly acknowledged his connections to the death squads and has even claimed to have personally participated in killings, which has reinforced his “strongman” image. Human Rights Watch and other organizations have condemned Duterte’s actions as potential crimes against humanity, but his administration consistently denies the existence of police death squads.
