SUNGAI BULOH LEPROSARIUM

(RAAP—008)

The Sungai Buloh Settlement, established in the 1920s, is a historical leprosy settlement in Malaysia known for its humane design and rehabilitation approach. Designed under the “Garden City” principles, the settlement featured well-planned residential areas and natural ventilation to enhance patient well-being. It was a significant improvement over previous leprosaria, offering better living conditions and support for patients.

Historically leprosy patients endured stigma and inhumane treatment, often being forcibly segregated and mistreated. The settlement represented a more compassionate approach to treating leprosy by providing a supportive community and improved living conditions for both local and international patients. Despite facing  threats of demolition, the settlement was designated a heritage site by the Selangor state government in 2008
